Hutch

A few days after my date with Kim, I sat in the compound with Grizz. We’d been talking about mostly nothing, just hanging out. I needed to ask Grizz something, but hadn’t been able to work up the courage. Or to figure out a way to ask that wouldn’t give away what I was thinking. I finally brought it up while we were playing a game of pool.

Grizz knocked in the seven ball and I asked, “So, have you thought any more about Zoey being pregnant again?”

Grizz raised an eyebrow and looked at me. “Like, fuckin’ every day.” He laughed and so did I.

“No,” I said. “I mean about the fact that she’s having a second shifter baby. A year ago none of us thought it was even possible. Then we find out about Dax’s girl, then Rainer. But for her to carry two? What do you think makes her able to do that?”

Grizz leaned against his cue and stared at the green felt of the table. He then looked at me quizzically. “It’s weird, yeah, but why are you asking, Hutch?”

I sighed. I should have known Grizz would pick up on what I was getting at.

“Okay, it’s kind of hard for me to admit. Kinda gun-shy, but I’ve been thinking about the future. With Kim, you know? What if, hypothetically, I know, what if this all works out? What if we end up together and she wants kids but can’t have them?”

Grizz clicked his tongue and raised his eyebrows. “Well, that would be an obstacle. I guess you’d need to ask Kim her thoughts on kids. In the event you two get serious, that is. See if she would be opposed to, I don’t know, adoption or a surrogate?”

I let out a huge breath and leaned against the pool table, “Honestly, I can't believe I’m even having these thoughts.”

Grizz laughed, loud and hard, and said, “I told you, man! I told you it would happen when you found the one!”

My phone rang then. I answered to get out of the uncomfortable conversation. “This is Hutch.”

“Hey, man, are you at the compound?” It was Rogue. “I need to talk to you. Some shit’s going down you need to know about.”

My stomach did a little flip. “Kim? Is Kim okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, she’s good. Brick’s watching her. It’s about Richard. Listen, I’ll tell you in person. I’ll be at the compound in five minutes.”

He hung up on me, and I looked at Grizz, then told him what Rogue had said.

“That is some ominous shit right there,” Grizz said.

Five minutes later, Rogue came jogging into the compound, looking upset, maybe panicked. It did not fill me with the warm and fuzzies.

Seeing Grizz, he sighed with relief. “I’m glad you’re here. You need to know too.”

I raised my hand. “Rogue, man, what is going on?”

Rogue said, “So you remember about Richard’s wife? The attempted murder charges and stuff?”

I nodded. “Yeah, sure.”

“Okay, well the charges were pending. It was all based on what some neighbors heard and obviously the wife.
